'Threads' is a fashion and beauty editorial blending surrealism with contemporary aesthetics. Inspired by the spider lily flower, renowned for its beauty and haunting connotations, the editorial seeks to weave a narrative of ambiguity that is both evocative and elegant, tinged with dark undertones.
Delving into contrasts of texture, light, and darkness, as well as themes of masculinity and femininity, 'Threads' explores motifs such as hair as a defining feature that transcends traditional gender boundaries. This concept metaphorically represents the "threads" of our existence. The editorial also delves into the art of garment construction as a reflection of individuality, while contemplating themes of androgyny.
Drawing heavily from my fashion background and upbringing as a child of first-generation immigrants with a deeply patriarchal heritage, juxtaposed against my experience growing up in Australia, I developed a complex relationship with femininity. This internal conflict led me to reject what I perceived as overly feminine, shaping my moody and dark aesthetic and preference for a more masculine style and interest in androgyny.
The editorial is inspired by influential figures such as designer Rick Owens, celebrated for his macabre designs and monochromatic palette, and photographers Tim Walker and Choi Gi Seok, known for their surrealistic approach to fashion. Influences from Tim Burton’s "Corpse Bride" and myths surrounding water nymphs resonate in particular, especially in the fluidity and movement of dress designs I sought to create. This fluidity contrasts with structured and tailored pieces, symbolising the dualities within my aesthetic vision.
